Botox Cost – Is It Worth It?

Botox is not just a cosmetic injection; it is also approved for the treatment of certain neurological disorders such as cervical dystonia, strabismus and blepharospasm. In addition, it is used for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis that can not be managed adequately with externally applied agents. But Botox treatment can be expensive. Is Botox cost commensurate to the benefits that can be derived from treatments?

Utility is a primary factor that affects an individual’s perception of what something is worth. That something may be very useful for one but be absolutely useless for another. For the person to whom the thing is very useful, its cost is definitely justifiable and can be said to be “worth it”. On the other hand, for the one to whom it is useless, it would be “worthless” and its cost would not be justifiable at all, no matter how minimal it may be.

This is a classic case of value against cost, or, rather, it is a case of Botox treatment value against Botox cost. The benefits to be derived from a Botox treatment may be very valuable to one person but not to another. And even for those to whom the treatment is of value, there are different levels of perception of what it is worth. Before making a judgement, one’s expectations from treatments must be carefully considered and weighed against the cost involved.

Expectations need to be set at a proper level to determine the value of Botox treatments as well as the justifiability of Botox cost. Knowledge of what Botox can, and can not, do will help one know what to expect from Botox treatments. Since Botox is approved and used for wrinkle reduction, hyperhidrosis, and neurological disorders, the benefits it provides for the treatment of these cases need to be known.

For the reduction of wrinkles, Botox is injected in tiny amounts into muscles underlying wrinkled skin to render them immobile so that skin folds and creases become less noticeable. The procedure takes only about ten minutes, and, since it is non-surgical, there is no recovery time needed. Effects become visible in a few days and last up to four months. Continual treatment, done about every four months, is needed to maintain the effects. Though Botox significantly reduces wrinkles, there is no radical change in one’s appearance.

To manage axillary hyperhidrosis, Botox is injected in multiple spots just beneath the skin of the affected underarm. It then blocks nerve impulses that stimulate sweat glands, thus stopping excessive sweating. Within four weeks after the first treatment, there should be a significant reduction in underarm sweating. This effect can last for a period of at least 6 or 7 months. Again, continual treatment is needed to maintain the effects.

In the treatment of neurological disorders, Botox is also injected. The amount of Botox to be injected and the site of injection depend on the disorder and the muscles that are affected. After the injections are given, there may be slight pain, tenderness, and bruising at the injection site. Within a couple of days to two weeks, relief from the symptoms of the disorder will be experienced. The effects can last up to three months.

Since the effects of Botox for any of the conditions above last several months, the duration of effectiveness should be taken into account along with the intrinsic advantages to be derived from the treatments. If the effects Botox treatments and their duration is something that would be valuable in terms of being able to live a happier, more normal life, then Botox cost would certainly be “worth it”.
