What is Botox?

Just about everyone has heard of Austin Botox treatments. However, for those that aren’t sure or would like to know more specifics about it, let’s take a few moments to discuss it in detail.

It’s actually a drug made from a toxin. This toxin is made by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. Only very small doses of it are used in the medication form, however. It would take approximately 3,000 units to cause paralysis and this is no where near the amount of botox that is injected. The average face is injected with about 40 units.

The drug is used to treat several different problems. It’s most commonly cited as a cosmetic procedure, however, that’s not all it’s good for. As a cosmetic treatment, Botox is injected into the facial muscles in order to temporarily weaken them. This helps to remove wrinkles for a short period of time.

It can also be used to treat sweating problems. Those who have excessive amounts of underarm sweat may see a significant improvement in their condition by receiving injections there. Also, this treatment can help ease the symptoms of cervical dystonia, a condition that causes the neck and shoulders to contract and spasm uncontrollably.

People with misaligned eyes or strabismus also benefit from the use of these injections, as do those with excessive blinking or blepharospasm.

One treatment will typically last between three and four months, give or take. It’s generally considered not harmful, though as with any form of treatment, there are some side effects.

Side effects of getting these injections include headache, upset stomach, flu-like symptoms, pain at the injection site, though this latter side effect is temporary. Additionally, women who are pregnant or breast feeding should not receive injections.

This form of treatment has gained a lot of media attention over the years, for good or for bad, but it’s important to note how important a healthy body image is. If getting a few injections around the eyes or mouth a couple times a year helps you to feel more confident in yourself and be more self-assured, what’s the harm? it’d definitely be worth any short-term discomfort or the relatively small cost.

Though you can’t turn the clock back on aging, you can do your part to help time stand still. Botox may be the answer for you. As with any form of treatment, be sure to discuss it thoroughly with your doctor to make sure it’s the right way to go for your current situation and health.
